What is Unified Communications?

Unified communications (UC) is not a new term in telecommunications. But as time goes on it seems that more and more technologies are falling into this aggregate category. So what is unified communications? When someone refers to it what are they really saying?

Definition
According to the International Engineering Consortium, unified communications is an industry term used to describe all forms of call and multimedia/cross-media message-management functions controlled by an individual user for both business and social purposes. This includes any enterprise informational or transactional application process that emulates a human user and uses a single, content-independent personal messaging channel (mailbox) for contact access.

OK, so let's digest that information a bit. So basically, UC is any device and/or piece of software that allows you to aggregate messaging. For instance, say you use a hosted VoIP PBX for your business VoIP service. Some of these devices allow you to receive faxes, calls and have voicemails transcribed and sent to your inbox. The technology allows you to unify these forms of communication and is therefore a UC product.

What is Unified Communications?

Common UC Technologies
Unified communications systems can fall into a variety of categories. Many business VoIP services are also unified communications products. Common business VoIP UC technologies are hosted VoIP PBX systems and IP-PBX systems. There are also hybrid business VoIP systems that have qualities that can be attributed to both of these VoIP technologies. Other unified communications technologies are smart phones, like the iPhone or Blackberry, and web services like Google Buzz.

Why is UC Important?
Experts believe that aggregate comunications technologies are the future. The issue is, with so many different technologies and ways to transfer data, it is important that communications devices and software have the ability to digest that information and make it easily presentable to end users.

American Communications Network Review

American Communications Network also known as ACN is a direct response network marketing company that has been in existence since 1993. They have a myriad of products ranging from internet, local and long distance services, satellite TV, along with other telecommunication services.

The objective of American Communications Network is to market products and services using a peer to peer approach. In order for an individual to market these products and/or services, they must become an independent distributor first. The cost can range anywhere from on up to 9, depending on your level of commitment.

Once a distributor, you can sign up for the services yourself and earn monthly commissions on the services that you currently use or you can sign up for the various vendors and utilize their services and get paid as well.

American Communications Network Review

Like all other network marketing companies, there will always be some type of product and/or service involved for it to be a legitimate opportunity. But the issue that I see is that most individuals that start these types of home-based businesses don't have a real clue as to how they are built. The hope of having big money and free time is wonderful, but so many are not able to accomplish due to the lack of proper training.

American Communications Network has great leadership and a wonderful marketing team lead by long term experienced professionals and has had a track record of creating several multimillionaires in the process. Some top income earners have gotten their start with the company and has moved on due to their desire to earn a more substantial income elsewhere.

That too is one of the biggest issues with joining a company and not really have the necessary following (group of distributors) to transition into a new company if you choose to. ACN or any other company should never be a business owner's primary focus if they don't want to be disappointed.

Too many distributors get the "glorified sales rep" mentality and don't think about how they should be working on building a "personal" brand of themselves. There is a reason why most top income earners in American Communications Network are able to transition over to another company and it's because they have done a wonderful job of developing themselves.

You see they aren't known because of the company, they are known because of how they have set themselves up through personal branding. They took the time to sell themselves, their abilities to get you what you needed or wanted, and that over time they were able to master certain skill-sets that will pay them for life.

One rule of thumb that should always be kept close to your heart if you plan on being a leader in any company is that people are not prone to follow companies, products, and/or services, but they are more likely to follow YOU.

If there has ever been any wonder why most of the top income earners in American Communications Network have gotten to the top, it's this secret that they know. For whatever reason, most people are comfortable being a follower because it doesn't take a whole lot out of them. It's the same mentality that most who work a nine to five job has. They can't see themselves being or doing the things necessary to run their own business day to day.

American Communications Network is just a "vehicle" of opportunity just like all the others, but it takes someone to get into the drivers' seat to actually move it forward. If you get the proper, most current up to date marketing training, there is a great chance that you can make it work. You can't rely on the old methods that most of these companies are utilizing to teach their distributors today.

After-Death Communications - Receiving Messages From the Deceased

When a loved one dies, they typically visit us shortly after their death. Some call this an after death communication; I call it a rock star moment. This is your personal Big Bang moment with your deceased loved one. But, please don't despair if you've never experienced a rock star sign. Some people never do, or some receive these signs years later. Personally, my biggest rock star moment was seeing my sister in my bedroom soon after she died. This jump-started our initial communication. Maybe something similar has happened to you, but you weren't sure if it was real. Perhaps you worry that you blew your big moment, that your window of communication has closed. Not the case. You can start any time by merely saying to your loved one on the other side: I miss you. I'm thinking about you. Are you okay? I'm here. Send me a sign. Let them know that you're feeling excited, happy, tired, angry, depressed. Whatever particular mood you're in, share it. Ask (for signs) and you shall receive.

Invite your loved one into your world. They've entered another, and may be waiting for an invitation back into yours. Trust the process, and your communication will soon flourish.

Allow me to share a rock star example for animal lovers (that's you, right?): Joyce and her family were obsessed with their only animal--a beautiful and vibrant German Shepherd, Leo. At eight years old, he contracted kidney disease. It was a quick and devastating decline that forced the family to put him down. Joyce and her mother couldn't get over it. Although they were a spiritual family and knew that it must have been "his time," and even believed they'd see him again one day, their hearts and intellects were miles apart. Nothing seemed to relieve their grief. Even a year later, Joyce's mother would cry every time she saw another big dog. They weren't letting him go, and had lost much of the joy in their family life.

After-Death Communications - Receiving Messages From the Deceased

When alive, Leo was 85-pounds, with a habit of thrusting his heavy frame against the sliding glass door to their dining room when he wanted inside. He'd stand on his hind legs and rock the glass back and forth with his front paws. It was a loud, bad habit, but they loved his energy and enthusiasm, and thought this was funny--marveling at how the glass didn't come crashing down.

Long after he passed, Joyce was at the house by herself, standing at the dining room table going through mail, when suddenly the sliding glass door began to rock wildly back and forth. Living in the Bay Area, she assumed they were having an earthquake and ran outside. But nothing else was moving. Something whispered to her that it was Leo; that he was trying to get her attention. She ran back inside and stared in amazement at the still-moving glass. She knew what Leo wanted. He wanted her and her mother to move forward with their lives, to stop grieving. When her mother came home, she told her what had happened, and they never mourned another day. It worked. The glass stayed silent.

Letting go of a loved one is one of the biggest challenges we'll ever face. We miss them, want to freeze them in time, and feel the comfort of their presence again. This, however, can freeze the both of you in place. Letting go makes room for evolution--of yourself, of them, and of what's meant to be. You can still communicate constantly. After all, they're with you day and night. But the grief must make way for celebration of who they were and still are. Letting them go isn't forgetting about them, it's letting their spirit fly. In turn, they're free to love, care for, and guide you.

Integrated Marketing Communications - 5 Primary Communication Tools

Communication is always one of the most important and vital strategic areas of an organization's success. You can have the best or most innovative products or services, but if your internal and external communications are weak, then the demand for your products or services raises a personal flag of concern. When communicating the value of your products or services, you want to focus on how they will benefit your clients.

When planning your strategy for Integrated Marketing Communication or IMC, you want to have dialogue with your customers by inviting interaction through the coordinated efforts of content, timing and delivery of your products or services. By ensuring direction, clarity, consistency, timing and appearance of your messages, conveyed to your targeted audience, these factors will help avoid any confusion about the benefits of your brand, through the connection of instant product recognition.

When looking at your marketing mix, you're examining price, distribution, advertising and promotion, along with customer service. Integrated marketing communication is part of that marketing mix included in your marketing plan. IMC strategies define your target audience, establishes objectives and budgets, analyzes any social, competitive, cultural or technological issues, and conducts research to evaluate the effectiveness of your promotional strategies.

Integrated Marketing Communications - 5 Primary Communication Tools

If companies are ethically planning, communicating, and following industry guidelines, they will most likely earn the trust of their customers and target audience. There are five basic tools of integrated marketing communication:

1. Advertising:
This tool can get your messages to large audiences efficiently through such avenues as radio, TV, Magazines, Newspapers (ROP), Internet, Billboards and other mobile technological communication devices. This method can efficiently reach a large number of consumers, although the costs may be somewhat expensive.

2. Sales Promotion:
This tool is used through coupons, contests, samples, premiums, demonstrations, displays or incentives. It is used to accelerate short-term sales, by building brand awareness and encouraging repeat buying.

3. Public Relations:
This integrated marketing communications tool is initiated through public appearances, news/press releases or event sponsorships, to build trust and goodwill by presenting the product, company or person in a positive light.

4. Direct Marketing:
This tool will utilized email, mail, catalogs, encourage direct responses to radio and TV, in order to reach targeted audiences to increase sales and test new products and alternate marketing tactics.

5. Personal Selling:
Setting sales appointments and meetings, home parties, making presentations and any type of one-to-one communication, to reach your customers and strengthen your relationship with your clients, initiate this IMC tool.

Decisions linking the overall objectives and strategies during the marketing planning phases help to evaluate and fine-tune the specific activities of integrated marketing communication. Before selecting an IMC tool, marketing, product and brand managers must look at social, competitive, legal, regulatory, ethics, cultural and technological considerations. One thing you want to avoid when activating the tools of integrated marketing communication is reaching inappropriate audiences and causing controversy. That could be damaging when trying to build brand awareness and encourage consumer spending with your company. When marketing managers examine the beliefs, emotions and behavior of their targeted audience towards their brand, they can influence their beliefs to achieve product awareness, by attracting attention to their promotional campaigns.

Five Guidelines For Ethical Business Communications

Do you understand what behaving ethically entails? According to Michael Josephson, there are four principles of ethical behavior: honesty, integrity, fairness, and concern for others. You can think of these four basic principles as the legs of an imaginary stool. One missing leg will create a wobbly stool, but two missing legs makes the stool collapse. If you aren't fair or caring, your pride in being honest and having integrity means nothing.

Ethical Behavior in Business

As of late, ethical business behavior has been a number one topic of concern. Reviewing the events of the last year, it would appear that the words "business" and "ethics" are conflicting terms. Whether you look to Wall Street, mortgage companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, or private companies like AIG, never mind all of the mortgage companies being investigated for questionable business practices, the news is depressing. It appears that the 1980's mantra "greed is good" never truly went away.

Five Guidelines For Ethical Business Communications

The criminal dealings of top entrepreneurs have been uncovered, which should motivate other individuals to behave more ethically. In truth, however, it commonly acts as an excuse for not changing poor behavior. What harm can there be in using your company's PC computer for personal business when your manager uses the company's telephone for personal long distance calls? When employees see how company management conducts itself, they begin to feel no shame for whatever little indiscretions they may have committed themselves.

Managers can unintentionally be signaling that unethical behavior will be tolerated when they put pressure on a smaller, downsized staff to produce more. When employees feel forced to meet company goals by whatever means possible, ethical behavior may go by the wayside.

They get the message, "It's OK to be dishonest, as long as you meet your objectives." As the economy takes us on a roller coaster ride, we need to evaluate our own thought patterns to ensure that we don't allow ourselves to fall into unethical behavior just because it looks like we can easily get away with it. There is always room for improvement in your business communications.

These are five guidelines to assist you in communicating ethically (source: "Business Communication, Process & Product," Mary Ellen Guffy, 2000):

(1) Be truthful. Statements that are misleading or untrue should never be made. It is also not ethical to tell partial truths or to exaggerate.

(2) Be sure to label opinions as opinions. Do not attempt to convince anyone that something you merely believe to be true is already a proven fact. Do the work; research thoroughly and assure yourself that you aren't just representing another person's opinion as your own.

(3) Do not show bias. Understand that your own subjective beliefs may come through in your writing. Even if you are passionate in your opinions, ethics call for you to be dispassionate in your presentation.

(4) Your communications should be easy to understand. You should put down your thoughts clearly, so they are simple to comprehend. Make sure that what you write can be easily understood by the reader. Don't muddy the waters by using convoluted sentences and all sorts of hard-to-comprehend industry jargon.

(5) Credit your sources. Do not copy anyone's work. Most people have the basic knowledge that they must use quotation marks if they are using a direct quote from another writer. Yet there are a number of people who do not understand that they need to properly credit other people's ideas as well. You are still cheating if you paraphrase sentences and throw in a handful of new words without crediting the author.

Summation

Not only must you communicate ethically to be successful in the long run, but it is also morally correct. Be sure you conduct yourself in the way that you would want others to emulate. If you conduct your affairs ethically and are successful, other individuals will follow your lead.

Communication Skills & Leadership - Organizational Communications Processes in Leadership Activity

"Sooth 't were a pleasant life to lead,
With nothing in the world to do
But just to blow a shepherd's reed,
The silent season thro'
And just to drive a flock to feed,-
Sheep - quiet, fond and few!"
- Laman Blanchard

Communication skills give leaders ways to connect with, understand and influence the needs of people. It would be so very pleasant to live the life depicted in Blanchard's musings.

Even though leadership combines the roles of shepherd, steward and orchestral conductor, people are not sheep, people do not dance to every tune, people will not feed on any old meal.

Communication Skills & Leadership - Organizational Communications Processes in Leadership Activity

The primary leadership activity involves using organizational communications processes to establish relationships, garner commitment, advise and counsel and educate or develop their people.

Grow Relationships, Make Commitments

"Nature has given us two ears but only one mouth."
- Benjamin Disraeli

However, God actually affirms, "death and life are in the power of the tongue". The meaning of that sentence is simply this - we should open our mouths and say [write or type] whatever it is that we want to bring into existence!

Wise leaders use their words to convey their most essential, important and useful thoughts - otherwise, leaders listen for the clues, pains, hopes and boundaries being communicated by others.

Powerful leaders tend to say profoundly meaningful things that will engage, connect and commit people to their cause.

Advise and Counsel by Discovering

"We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success. We often discover what will do by finding out what will not do; and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery." - Samuel Smiles

You can easily learn new things by using everyday organizational communications processes such as meetings, briefings, presentations, forums, discussions, written exchanges, casual conversations, reviews and coaching or consulting sessions.

Just how are leaders supposed to know what is profound or meaningful to other people?

People usually find ways to communicate those needs, desires and fears that are most important to them. People will always reveal those feelings or thoughts about themselves through their spoken, written and unspoken communications.

By asking how, what, why, when, with whom or where a person is doing something, you can glean much information about them and their impressions and preferences.

Educate, Develop and Train One Byte At A Time

"Heaven is not reached at a single bound;
But we build the ladder by which we rise
From the lowly earth to the vaulted skies,
And we mount to its summit round by round."
- Josiah Gilbert Holland

Investing your time and energy into listening to others will help you learn more about their concerns, hopes and guiding beliefs.

You can incorporate the leadership activities, communication skills and organizational communications processes previously mentioned to help your people and yourself:

- Learn by structured doing [training]

- Learn by practicing and assessing [developing]

- Learn by experimenting, exploring and discussing [educating]

Be the leader other people appreciate and look forward to communicating with - master these skills and watch your associates grow, flourish and succeed.

How to Write Marketing Communications Plans

Marketing Communications are "all strategies, tactics, and activities involved in getting the desired marketing messages to intended target markets, regardless of the media used" (MarcommWise, 2006). Tony Yeshin (1999) defines marketing communications as "the process by which a marketer develops and presents stimuli to a defined target audience with a purpose of eliciting a desired set of responses" (Yeshin, 1999). Marketing communications are: adverting, sales promotions, personal selling, PR and direct and interactive marketing (Fill, 1999).
Consequently Marketing Communications Plan is the marketing plan which promotional plan incorporates two or more integrated marketing communications mediums aiming to reiterate the same goals and objectives. Marketing Communications Plans are considered by many professionals as an excellent way to effectively communicate with target audience.

Communications - Educational Training Online

Communication takes places across many mediums and students can pursue an education in a variety of programs. Online training teaches students the foundational types of the industry, which includes mass communications, wireless communications, and mass communications. Accredited online colleges and universities provide students with degree programs in each area.

Training online can be entered from the certificate to doctoral degree level. Some areas like media communication may not be available at all degree levels in which case students can take certain courses that can be applied to further study at a later time. Many students that want to gain a full degree in areas like media communications go on to train at traditional colleges. The level of a degree program determines the length of education. For example, a certificate program takes approximately four months and a bachelor's program takes about four years. Students can follow their passion into degree programs that teach them how to become:JournalistsAdvertisersElectrical Engineering TechniciansFilmmakersTelecommunications AnalystsNetwork TechniciansPhotographers

Other specialized careers can be entered after students complete a focused education online. With the field being comprised of the latest advances in technology students can expect to gain a complete understanding of how communication works.

Communications - Educational Training Online

Mass communications is one of the most well-known educational study paths. This type of communication is used every day from a broadcaster on a radio station to an advertisement on a billboard. Online education in mass communications integrates the use of theory with practical experience to help students enter the field prepared. Students can choose a degree program with a concentration that can include journalism, advertising, or broadcasting. A broadcasting degree major will study how to create and disseminate a message via the radio or television. Online courses teach students how to write in broadcast style as well as use the industry's technical equipment.

Another area of study that can be entered is telecommunications. Students will take courses online that prepare them to be a part of communication production by using video, audio, or multimedia technologies. The field is broken down into several major aspects that allow communication through different mediums to take place. Wireless networks, satellite systems, and cable systems make up some core curriculum areas in a typical undergraduate degree. Students that enter online training at the graduate level will learn advanced techniques and theories to help motivate them to discover new ways to use advancing technology. Other available training options include visual communications and media communications,

Students should research the industry to find the right field of study and program that matches their career goals. Completing an accredited communications program online allows students to work from home while gaining the knowledge they need to step into a career. Full accreditation is provided by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (http://www.accsc.org) to schools and colleges that can provide students with a quality education. Training dives into the heart of the chosen field and prepares students to enter the profession ready.

If you have just experienced a hurricane that left your area temporarily without phone and electrical service you probably won't need a world wide radio communication setup with the accompanying extensive antenna system. But if you just went through an event that caused Continent wide destruction that will take months or even years to repair you may need a long reaching more complex system of communication with all its supporting elements.

For the purpose of this article I will layout what I believe may be required for two very different scenarios. Scenario one is a short term temporary phone outage lasting a few days to a couple weeks and the second one being a long term total communication failure.

Emergency Communications

For short term local communication needs there are several options available. The best known probably being the good old citizen band 40 channel AM transceiver. FRS and GMRS hand held walkie talkies can also be used if you prefer but don't believe the hype about the 17 mile range. In real world situations you are lucky to get 2 mile range.

Of these options I would recommend a quality 40 channel CB with SSB (single side band)capability. SSB is a mode of transmission that concentrates the outgoing power in just one side band and suppresses the carrier and other side band which enables the transmitter to have three times the output power of a garden variety AM CB set.

Another more reliable solution for short range (up to 50 miles) communication is the 2 meter Amateur Radio FM handie talkie. The problem with these radios is they require an FCC License to operate legally. A "Technician Class" amateur radio license (needed for 2 meter FM) is fairly simple to obtain. All that's needed is a study guide (readily available through ARRL) some study time and the successful completion of a 35 question multiple choice exam.

Phone and power outages with no foreseeable chance of restoration is a very different problem. In my opinion a modern High Frequency ham radio would be the best option for both short and long range reliable communication. HF (high frequency) sets usually span from just above the AM radio band to about 30mhz.They can also be used to monitor short wave broadcasts from FEMA and other agencies.

You will need to pass a more advanced Amateur Radio Exam in order to transmit legally on these radios.

Any radio you acquire will also need a matching antenna.

Antenna Matching

Most transmitters, with the exception of the hand held variety that come with an already attached antenna, need the antenna matched to the feed line and transmitter.

The lower the transmitting frequency the longer the antenna. Transmitting antennas in the AM radio band are 300ft. long. CB radio antennas are around 8 ft. long. If the antenna isn't matched properly to the transmitter, part of the outgoing power will be reflected back to the final stage in the transmitter where it could burnout the final amplification stage. (that's a bad thing)

The formula for a half wave dipole (a simple transmitting antenna) is "freq in megahertz divided by 468 equals length of the antenna in feet. " A quick search on Google will give you many home brew antenna building plans.

After constructing one of the above antennas you will need to check the SWR (standing wave ratio) of the antenna to make sure its matched properly with the transmitter and feed line. This procedure is easily done with an inexpensive SWR meter, found at any electronics store.

Don't worry about not getting it right the first time. Most modern transmitters have a limiting circuit that will cut power if the antenna isn't matched properly, Thus saving the finals from any damage.

Marketing Communications Audit - What is It, and Why is it Necessary?

As a product manager or marketing director a key responsibility is to develop and implement an effective marketing communications strategy. One place to start is with a communications audit.

An audit is a review of all current marketing and other communications vehicles to answer some basic questions:

Communications

o What are we saying about our company/brand/products?
o Is the message consistent across formats and audiences?
o How are we presenting the information?
o Who are we talking to?

Marketing Communications Audit - What is It, and Why is it Necessary?

The results of the audit should help clarify the communications strategy and provide a framework for future projects.

The simplest way to begin is to gather all existing materials and lay them out on a big conference table. Materials would include product and corporate brochures, product packaging, business cards and letterhead, annual reports, advertisements, direct mail pieces, investor kits, and website screen shots. Even things like internal memos, press releases, promotional items, company t-shirts or hats, and PowerPoint templates should be included.

Once everything is laid out, some basic questions can be answered. First, do all the items look like they are from the same company? Is there some consistency in layout, use of color, and fonts?

Second, is the company positioning clear? In other words, if you asked several people to review a number of your communications and tell you what they perceived to be the company mission or value offering, would the answers be consistent? Or would it depend on what pieces were reviewed?

Third, what are the key messages that are being communicated? Are those messages coherent, or fragmented? Are the messages consistent with your intent?

For many businesses, the answers to these questions are not encouraging. Fragmentation and inconsistency are common, especially as an organization grows and as communications responsibility becomes dispersed.

Unless there is someone within the company charged with maintaining an overall vision, and empowered to enforce guidelines and standards, it is often unavoidable that the communications water gets muddied.

Some may say, "So what?" There is a feeling that as long as each entity within the firm is communicating effectively with its own constituency, there shouldn't be a problem except for marketing purists. The fallacy with this argument becomes obvious once you begin talking to various stakeholders within the organization, as well as customers and investors who are either getting the wrong message, or aren't sure about what the message is in the first place.

The communications audit is really only the first step. Understanding the impact your messages are having requires research, and developing a process for ongoing review and implementation integrity requires dedication.

It's one thing to give lip service to communications consistency, but quite another to put in place the means to make it happen. By regularly reviewing your communication strategy, and evaluating your materials to ensure they are meeting your goals, you will improve message clarity and better meet the needs of your customers, investors, and employees.

Marketing Communications - Changes in Technology, Customer Behavior and the Economy

It is no secret that the Internet and related new technology has changed the face of marketing communications. Much like the inception of radio and television affected business communications years ago, the Internet is turning marketing methods of the past on their heads and recreating the environmental landscape of buying and selling. History has shown there will be winners and losers in the midst of these changes, but you can stay on top by making sure your Online Marketing and Advertising efforts are current and applicable to today's customer.

What is happening NOW in marketing communications?

Communications

Search engine optimization, video, social media, audio and RSS are just a few of the terms that are becoming an integral part of relevant marketing strategies. A shift in customer thinking and behavior has required business owners to leave behind old advertising methods and learn how to use these aforementioned tools to reach customers.

Marketing Communications - Changes in Technology, Customer Behavior and the Economy

While ten years ago a banner ad may have pulled in the customers, today many customers will immediately view the ad skeptically. Replacing traditional advertising are customer recommendations and word-of-mouth through blogs, message boards and other forums.

In a way, this takes some of the financial pressure off of your shoulders, which is a relief in today's fragile economic times. You don't have to have deep pockets or break your revised budgets to purchase the big ads and flashy marketing in order to compete. Instead, you must know your niche well enough to provide the quality information customers are seeking. You also must learn where your customers are hanging out online, so you can join in their communities and discussions. We are transitioning to a new profession that takes dedication, insight, authenticity and smarts to succeed.

How can you become a marketing communications winner?

No business owner or brand manager wants to lose out on customers just because the world of advertising and marketing is changing. Good news--you don't have to! In fact, you can thrive and see your business go to new levels if you implement an effective strategy that works in today's market.
Below are three simple tips to help you find your way to success:

o Research in order to know your niche, your customers, your competitors and your keywords. Your research goal is to become an expert on not only your business niche but also your customers. You want to know who they are, where they go online and what words they plug into the search engines. Free search engines and keyword tools (such as the Google Keyword Tool) make this step simple.

o Get comfortable with the idea of using social media. If you want to connect with customers, you are going to have to tap into social media. By participating in blogs, networking sites and other online communities, you can work with your prospective customers on their level. These relationships can turn into dollar signs.

o Offer something of value to potential customers. Once you have made a connection with people online, you want to make sure you keep them engaged by offering them quality information and solutions to their problems. Doing this helps you to build rapport and trust as well as keep you in the fore-front of their minds when they are ready to buy.

Understanding the Changing Role of a Corporate Communications Department

With the advent of social media, many communications departments are rethinking how they communicate with employees. During the early years of the internet, communications were driven to employees through a top-down approach. In other words, a business leader worked with the communications department to craft the message and then disseminate that message to the workforce. However, in today's environment, this top-down approach often excludes the opportunity for employees to generate and contribute content.

An example to help illustrate this point can be seen in something as simple as allowing comments for articles. Communications departments used to just post an article on the company intranet to help communicate key messages. Today, these same articles can be posted with the option to allow employees to comment on the article itself. Employees can contribute simply by expressing their opinion. Often, these comments can carry more weight than the actual article itself and the communications department has little to no control of the messaging that develops.

Communications

This perceived loss of control with Web 2.0 formats can create problems with the management team. While a communications department might support user-generated content, a business leader might find some of the information that is created to be negative or harmful in nature-even if the information adheres to company policies and guidelines regarding social media behavior. It is therefore critical for business communicators to have the full support of the executive management team before implementing social media tools.

Understanding the Changing Role of a Corporate Communications Department

With much of the content being generated outside of the communications department, many communicators are redefining their roles within the communications process. While there will always be a need for top-down communications, there in now a need for social media monitoring and participation. Business communicators should no longer solely be focused on generating messages for the management team; instead, they should also be focused on helping foster discussion amongst employees and then communicating the key points from those discussions back to the management team.
